Rwandan coffee is almost entirely one variety — Red Bourbon — grown on the terraced 'thousand hills' around Lake Kivu and across Nyamasheke, Huye and the south. After 2000, a national bet on washing stations transformed smallholder cherry (the average farm counts a few hundred trees) into some of East Africa's most elegant washed lots: red berry, citrus, florals, silky sweetness. A new generation of stations — like Gasharu, whose experimental lots DAK imports — is now pushing naturals and fermentation experiments on the same beautiful base.
