Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Duane Sorenson opened Stumptown on Portland's Division Street in 1999 and the brand became shorthand for an entire era of American coffee: single farms bought at then-unheard-of prices, roasts that let origin speak, and a house style that made specialty feel like culture rather than commerce. Alongside Intelligentsia and Counter Culture, Stumptown defined the direct trade buying of the 2000s, and its brown-bottle cold brew stubby effectively launched packaged cold brew as a category. The Hair Bender blend — named for the hair salon the first shop replaced — remains one of the most famous products in specialty coffee. Ownership passed to Peet's in 2015; sourcing and roasting stay in Portland. The blends live on the bar, and this index tracks the rotating single origins from Latin America, Africa and the Asia Pacific.
