Obatá is an IAC selection from Brazil, developed from the Sarchimor group by crossing Villa Sarchi with the Timor Hybrid to combine leaf-rust resistance with reliable yields. It has become a workhorse on many Brazilian and Central American farms, prized for adapting well to dense plantings and warmer conditions. In the cup it tends toward chocolate, nutty sweetness and gentle stone fruit, and careful processing can coax out surprising layers of tropical fruit. Once dismissed as a purely agronomic variety, it is increasingly showing up in expressive microlots.
