Lempira is a Catimor-derived variety widely planted across Honduras for its rust tolerance and strong yields, named after the Indigenous leader who resists Spanish conquest. For years it anchored much of the country's production until a surge of leaf rust in the 2010s exposed its vulnerability, prompting growers to diversify. The cup is clean and balanced, typically showing mild sweetness, nutty tones and gentle fruit. It remains a backbone variety for many Honduran smallholders.
