Liberica is one of the few cultivated coffee species outside Arabica and Robusta, native to West and Central Africa and grown across parts of Southeast Asia. Its trees are tall and hardy, bearing large, asymmetrical beans that look unlike anything from an Arabica plant. The cup is famously divisive: bold and heavy-bodied with woody, smoky and jackfruit-like notes that fans describe as unmistakably exotic. Long overlooked commercially, it is enjoying renewed interest from roasters seeking rarity and climate-resilient genetics.
Lineage
A separate coffee species (Coffea liberica), not an Arabica variety.
